ANZ (Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited) is a well-established institution in Australia’s financial industry, offering a range of banking and financial services. It’s among the top 4 banks in Australia and New Zealand and among the top 100 in the world based on market cap. It operates in close to 30 markets, serving over 8.5 million customers. ANZ’s world headquarters is in Melbourne.
ANZ traces its origins back to 1835 when the Bank of Australasia was set up in London. It opened its first branch in Sydney that same year.
In 1950, the Bank of Australasia merged with the Union Bank of Australia, forming ANZ Bank. In 1970, ANZ Bank merged with English, Scottish and Australian Bank Limited to form the ANZ that we know today. At that time, it was the largest merger in Australian banking history.
Over the years, ANZ has expanded through strategic partnerships, mergers and acquisitions. The organization continues to enhance its service offerings and extend its reach to serve customers in Australia and in the Asia-Pacific region.
ANZ's portfolio includes these products and services:
ANZ states its purpose is to shape a world where people and communities thrive. The bank links this purpose to improving customer financial wellbeing and sustainability across its retail and institutional businesses.
ANZ's 2030 strategy is organised around four pillars:
The strategy also identifies ANZ’s people, culture, and technology as key enablers in achieving the company’s vision and goals.
Nuno Matos took over as CEO in May 2025. He oversees the bank’s strategy and performance across key markets. Matos brings more than three decades of international banking experience, including senior roles at HSBC, Santander and other global institutions.
Matos was also named council chair of the Australian Banking Association (ABA) in December 2025.
ANZ’s future plans are framed by its ANZ 2030 strategy. This is being implemented in two phases across FY26–FY29, with an initial focus on productivity and “getting the basics right,” followed by a period targeting accelerated growth.
ANZ also plans to support the transition to a net zero economy by 2050, including a target to fund and facilitate at least $100 billion in social and environmental outcomes by 2030.
