How and when did you become a mortgage broker?
I grew up around finance, watching my dad’s journey from working in a bank to building his own mortgage broking business. Over his 30-year career, the positive impact he had on people’s lives left a lasting impression on me. I became a mortgage broker more than 15 years ago, driven by the same commitment to guiding clients in a personal and professional way.
In your opinion, what has been the most positive development in broking?
The most positive development in broking has been technology. It’s made the process so much more efficient, not just for brokers but for clients too. From digital document uploads and online applications, to online banking, quicker updates, and smarter comparison tools, clients now receive faster answers and a smoother experience. I may change my answer as AI continues to grow, but for now I see it as a tool to make our jobs better, not a substitute for the human element, which is still very much needed in broking!
What challenges do you see currently facing the industry, and what solutions would you propose?
One of the challenges I see in the industry is that brokers and banks aren’t always under the same level of scrutiny when it comes to processes and document handling. That can sometimes lead to mistakes or misinformation that affect the client experience. A solution is greater standardisation and transparency across the industry – I believe all parties should have consistent processes.
Can you share a memorable or challenging experience from your career as a broker and the lessons you gained from it?
One of the most memorable parts of my career has been helping so many first-time homebuyers purchase their very first property. It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of such an important milestone. At the same time, every situation comes with its challenges – each client is different, and dealing with unfamiliar bank policies or inexperienced credit assessors can sometimes be a real headache. Navigating those challenges and finding solutions is part of the job, and it’s also how you grow and gain more knowledge.
Could you share any valuable advice for individuals aspiring to become brokers or those new to broking?
My advice for aspiring brokers is simple: don’t go into this business lightly. It’s a serious profession that requires dedication, attention to detail, and a genuine desire to help people achieve their financial goals. If you commit fully, stay curious, and keep learning, it’s incredibly rewarding.
