HIA names Hazan new national president

Law firm director also appointed vice president

HIA names Hazan new national president

The Housing Industry Association (HIA) has named Ian Hazan (pictured) as its new national president and David Morris as national vice president, following the conclusion of Debbie Johnson’s two-year term in the top role.

Hazan brings more than three decades of experience in the residential construction sector and has been active in HIA leadership for over 15 years. He previously served as Victorian president and chaired several national committees, including those overseeing training, membership and technical issues. He joined HIA’s national board of directors in 2016 and has worked closely with Johnson during her presidency.

According to HIA, Hazan’s commitment to innovation and forward-thinking strategy positions him well to lead the association through ongoing changes in technology and industry practices. “He is keen to ensure HIA is well equipped to support builders and the broader industry to navigate technological and business changes well into the future,” the organisation stated.

Morris, meanwhile, is a director at Simmons Wolfhagen, a Tasmanian law firm. His legal work has centred on residential development and local government planning approvals. He has been involved with HIA since before his 2021 appointment to the national board, having served on its Industrial Relations Committee, where he became national chair in 2017.

HIA is one of Australia’s largest residential building organisation, representing a broad membership base that includes builders, trade contractors, design professionals and suppliers. It serves as the national voice for the residential construction sector, providing advocacy and support for its members across the country.

In its announcement, HIA acknowledged the contributions of outgoing president Debbie Johnson, noting her service over the past two years. “HIA would like to congratulate Ian and David as they assume their new positions... [and] recognise the significant contribution of our outgoing national president Debbie Johnson.”
