Australia ranked among the best countries for holiday homes

Global index cites affordability, weather and amenities across 50 destinations

Australia ranked among the best countries for holiday homes

Australia has been placed second in a global ranking of holiday home destinations, based on research commissioned by price comparison website Compare the Market.

The index assessed 50 locations drawn from more than 40 countries, scoring them on affordability, climate and lifestyle amenities to gauge their appeal for holiday home ownership. Australia recorded an overall score of 7.46 out of 10.

Cyprus ranked first with 8.25, followed by Australia. Malta (7.11), Italy (6.91) and Greece (6.76) completed the top five.

Compare the Market said Australia’s result was supported by factors including average monthly rainfall of 36.94mm, an average temperature of 22.8°C, and 405 places to eat per 100,000 people.

The analysis also pointed to strengths among other leading destinations. Cyprus was listed as having 534 restaurants per 100,000 people alongside low rainfall.

Malta was cited for 414 activities per 100,000 people and favourable weather, while Italy and Greece were described as offering relatively affordable housing and established food cultures.

Stephen Zeller of Compare the Market“Buying a holiday home is about more than just finding a beautiful location; it’s about making a smart financial decision,” said Stephen Zeller (pictured right), general manager of money at Compare the Market Australia.

Affordability is a key factor, as is weather and lifestyle amenities. That’s where comparing home loan options becomes crucial. Understanding what’s available across lenders can help holiday home buyers look for a deal that suits both their budget and goals.

“Whether you’re purchasing for personal use, rental income, or a mix of both, comparing home loans can give you a clearer picture of your borrowing power and help you make informed decisions.”
