Ashkettle steps into oversight role aimed at strengthening standards across mutual lenders
The Customer Owned Banking Association (COBA) has announced the appointment of Patrick Ashkettle (pictured) as the new industry representative on the Customer Owned Banking Code Compliance Committee (COBCCC), with his term commencing on 1 January, 2026.
The appointment reflects recognition of Ashkettle’s background across regulatory frameworks and sector-specific governance.
His previous tenure as chief risk officer at Bank Australia, spanning more than a decade, established his credentials in the mutual banking sphere. His professional journey include 35 years within financial services, with particular emphasis on risk assessment, compliance frameworks, and governance structures within mutual institutions.
The COBCCC operates independently to monitor adherence to the Customer Owned Banking Code, which governs conduct standards across mutual banks, credit unions and building societies. These standards extend beyond statutory obligations, reflecting sector values centred on customer benefit.
A collaborative approach
“As a sector, we continue to work collaboratively to strengthen standards for the benefit of customers and communities,” said Elizabeth Crouch, chair of the Customer Owned Banking Association. “Mr. Ashkettle brings extensive experience to the Committee and will play a key role in continuing to uplift sector standards and ensure robust code compliance.
“The industry representative role carries significant responsibility. The position supplies the Committee with informed perspective on sector operations and structural realities, maintaining practical and contextually aware oversight mechanisms. This ensures standards remain achievable and informed by frontline experience.
“The COBA Board appointed Mr. Ashkettle for his expertise in codes of practice and his deep knowledge of the customer-owned banking sector, gained through his leadership in compliance and governance across key executive roles.”
Commenting on his appointment, Ashkettle said he would focus on upholding and advancing the Code’s standards. “Having worked with dedicated people across the sector whose commitment to responsible and sustainable banking naturally embraced the Code, I’m excited to broaden that connection,” he said. “I look forward to applying my three decades of financial services experience to our shared objectives.”
Ashkettle succeeds Cindy Hansen, whose tenure will conclude after nearly six years of service.
