Online network aims to strengthen female broker engagement and retention

Mortgage aggregator Connective has established the Empower Community, an online forum designed to support women brokers across Australia.
The initiative aims to respond to ongoing challenges faced by female professionals in the sector, including limited peer networks and a lack of visible leadership role models.
Women currently comprise 26.8% of the national broker workforce, a figure that has remained largely unchanged since 2019. Industry observers note that without targeted initiatives, progress towards gender diversity may stall.
The Empower Community was launched to provide a dedicated space for women brokers to connect, share experiences, and access mentorship. Since its inception in April, the group has attracted over 1,180 active members, making it one of the most engaged platforms of its kind.
“We have the privilege to be the aggregator of one of the largest cohorts of female brokers in the industry, and those brokers are all over the country, sometimes in remote or isolated places,” said Lorrie Storey (pictured top), head of marketing and communications at Connective. “We needed to scale our already existing and successful Empower program in an even more inclusive way and an online community that brings the connections experienced face-to-face online was the next logical step.
“It was important to us that we create a dedicated space where women could support one another, grow as leaders and build their businesses. Our Empower Community does that – it is a safe space where you don’t have to explain the unique pressure you face as a woman in broking because everyone in there already gets it.
“According to the MFAA, female brokers have shorter average tenure in the industry compared to their male counterparts. The responsibility falls on aggregators like us, to connect them, support above and beyond where we can, understanding that there is no one-size-fits all when it comes to their needs.”
Within the community, participants discuss a range of topics, including career development, overcoming workplace bias, celebrating achievements, and practical business management. The forum is moderated to ensure members receive relevant support, whether through peer connections or introductions to others in their region.
“Early feedback suggests a strong culture where new and established brokers alike feel welcome and empowered to participate,” Storey said. “Broking is relationship-based and communities have always been part of it. What has been missing for female brokers are spaces that tap into collective wisdom with empathy and encouragement.”
The Empower Community also links members to additional resources, such as training materials, marketing support, and peer events like the Broker Success Series, with the aim of translating shared experiences into practical outcomes.
“Ultimately, our aim has always been to contribute to stronger participation and retention of women in broking as this will contribute to more diverse leadership and the overall success of the industry,” Storey said.
