Westpac names Fowler head of business and wealth

Westpac has announced the appointment of Paul Fowler (pictured above) as its new chief executive of business and wealth.

Fowler, a financial services veteran with over two decades of experience, joins the bank from Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), where he currently serves as executive general manager of regional and agribusiness banking.

Fowler has held several leadership roles at CBA since joining in 2015. His past positions include chief financial officer for institutional banking and markets and executive general manager for mergers and acquisitions. Before his time at CBA, he worked in corporate finance for more than 10 years, holding senior positions at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, advising financial institutions in Australia and overseas.

Westpac chief executive Anthony Miller welcomed Fowler’s appointment, highlighting the latter’s extensive background in business banking.

“Paul has built an impressive track record of success over a long career, most recently leading business banking across regional Australia for CBA,” Miller said. “I know Paul will bring a strong customer focus, experience in leading high-performing teams and a drive for results in this important segment of the market for Westpac.”

Fowler will step into his new role in mid-2024, succeeding Peter Herbert, who has been serving as acting chief executive of business and wealth. Miller acknowledged Herbert’s contributions during the transition.

“Since my appointment as Westpac CEO, Peter has done a superb job of driving momentum and focus in the division,” Miller said. “I thank him for stepping in to act in this role during a critical transition period.”
