New body to represent retail property interests across Australia
The Property Council of Australia has formed a new division, Retail Property Australia, to focus on advocacy for the retail property sector.
Retail Property Australia will be member-led and will represent the interests of the sector at both national and local levels. The division’s remit includes advocacy on retail property matters, providing member-focused services such as events, research, and education, and offering a forum for strategic industry engagement.
A council for the new division, made up of elected members including a president and two vice presidents, will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
The division’s advocacy priorities will be set in partnership with the inaugural council.
According to the Property Council, more than 1,300 of its members have indicated an interest in retail property. The creation of Retail Property Australia aligns with the board’s intention to deliver advocacy across all major real estate sectors in the country.
Meanwhile, William Power (pictured top) has been named executive director of Retail Property Australia and will begin his role on Oct. 13.
He returns to the Property Council after working at Woolworths Group, where he served as head of government relations and industry affairs (property and supply chain). In that role, he managed national teams and worked with government on planning reform, productivity, and regulatory changes.
His recent work has involved improving planning processes and addressing the impact of government and regulatory reviews, as well as mergers and acquisitions reform, on retail property investment. He has also overseen crisis and issue management involving various stakeholders.
Previously, Power held senior positions with the New South Wales government during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. He is rejoining the Property Council after a previous stint with its NSW division.
