Scam prevention micro-skills course launched for brokers

MFAA's new training aims to bolster brokers' defences against scams

Scam prevention micro-skills course launched for brokers

The Mortgage & Finance Association of Australia (MFAA) has introduced a learning course focused on scam awareness and prevention, aiming to assist mortgage and finance brokers in identifying and managing threats to their businesses and clients.

This course is the first in the MFAA’s Micro-skills series, which offers targeted training for brokers seeking to update their expertise in essential areas.

“As trusted professionals, brokers manage confidential client data and play a vital role in safeguarding consumer trust,” said Anja Pannek (pictured top), MFAA chief executive. “This new Micro-skills course helps brokers recognise warning signs, take practical steps to prevent scams, and strengthen their cyber awareness, which is a critical aspect of running a high-quality and secure broking business. It’s particularly valuable for busy brokers who need to quickly brush up on their knowledge in this area and stay ahead of the curve.”

The Scam Awareness and Prevention course covers typical scams affecting brokers and their clients, such as payment redirection, email interception, and impersonation. It provides guidance on recognising risk factors, identifying signs of scams, and implementing measures to protect both brokers and clients.

Participants who complete the course are encouraged to consult the MFAA’s “What to do if you’ve been scammed” resource, available in the Broker Toolbox, for additional advice on prevention, response, and reporting.

These resources form part of the MFAA’s ongoing efforts to support members with practical tools that uphold the standards of MFAA accredited brokers and promote client protection across the sector.

The Scam Awareness and Prevention course, which provides 0.5 CPD hour, is accessible to MFAA members via the Learning Hub.

Additional Micro-skills courses on relevant industry topics are in development, the MFAA said.
