CBA announces departure of influential tech exec

Commonwealth Bank has announced the departure of group executive technology and group chief information officer Gavin Munroe (pictured) to “explore other opportunities outside the bank”.

CBA chief executive Matt Comyn acknowledged Munroe’s contributions, saying in a press release: “Since Gavin joined the bank, CBA has accelerated our technology modernisation program and strengthened our AI capabilities.

“Over the past three years, we have increased the pace of technology delivery while reducing operational incidents. To leverage cloud capabilities, we completed the full upgrade and migration of our SAP Core Banking platform to AWS - the largest system-of-record migration in our history.”

Munroe led CBA through the migration of its SAP Core Banking platform to Amazon Web Services, which Comyn called “the largest system-of-record migration in our history”.

Comyn also highlighted CBA’s recent advancements in artificial intelligence.

“CBA has continued to advance its position as a leader in AI and is now ranked #4 globally for AI maturity in financial services. We have partnered with global leaders in AI and established our own tech hub in Seattle to continue building world class AI and engineering talent and expertise,” he said.

“Looking ahead, we will continue to execute our established technology strategy and embed the use of AI throughout the organisation,” Comyn added. “We thank Gavin for his contribution and wish him well for the future.”

Rodrigo Castillo and Victoria Ledda will co-lead technology in the interim.

Munroe’s final day is scheduled for 22 December.
