BNZ offers relief for storm-affected customers

Widespread rain and gales have triggered road closures and damage across parts of New Zealand, prompting BNZ to activate support measures.

Financial support available for impacted customers
BNZ has announced a targeted relief package for customers affected by recent severe weather events in Canterbury and Wellington. The support is available immediately and aims to ease pressure on households, businesses, and farming operations as recovery begins.

“We understand that some of our customers may be facing unexpected challenges to their homes, businesses and communities and we are offering practical support to help relieve some of the pressure during this time, so people can focus on the clean-up and recovery,” said Karna Luke (pictured), BNZ executive customer products and services.

Relief measures across personal, business, and agri customers
The support includes the following measures:

  • Home lending: Customers can request a case-by-case review of their mortgage arrangements.
  • Personal overdrafts: Temporary overdrafts available for urgent funds access while awaiting insurance payouts (standard interest rates and credit criteria apply).
  • Small businesses: Temporary overdrafts up to $10,000 with no application fee.
  • Agri, Business, and Commercial customers: Temporary overdrafts up to $100,000, also with no application fee (standard interest rates and credit criteria apply).

Assistance channels open for all customers

Luke encouraged anyone experiencing hardship to contact the bank.

“We also have a range of other options available, especially for customers who are facing hardship, so I encourage people to get in touch so we can see how we can help,” he said.

BNZ,  has outlined multiple points of contact for different customer types:

  • Business and agribusiness customers: Contact your BNZ partner.
  • Small business owners: Call 0800 BNZSME.
  • Personal banking customers: Access support via digital channels or by calling 0800 ASKBNZ.

Insurance support also available
BNZ PremierCare Insurance customers requiring assistance can contact IAG NZ directly at 0800 248 888 or submit a claim online: BNZ Claims Portal.

BNZ has recently introduced a leading 18-month fixed home loan rate of 4.95% p.a. and maintains its forecast for the OCR to fall to 2.75%.
