HSBC names Steve Hughes CEO for Australia and New Zealand

HSBC has appointed Steve Hughes as CEO and head of Banking for Australia and New Zealand, effective January 1, 2026, according to a Reuters report.

Hughes joined HSBC in 2015 and has led the wholesale banking division for Australia and New Zealand since January 2023.

Prior to HSBC, Hughes spent more than 20 years at The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), specialising in international banking operations.

Hughes held several senior roles at RBS before relocating to Australia, where he led the bank’s Asia Pacific loan market team and later managed corporate debt capital markets and corporate coverage teams.

He graduated from the University of Leeds with a Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Economics and Mathematics.

Outgoing CEO

Antony Shaw will step down as CEO of HSBC Australia and New Zealand by the end of this year, with the bank set to announce his next role soon.

Appointed in September 2022, Shaw brings more than 30 years of experience across local and international banking institutions.
