Sue Griffiths steps up to lead FMT partnerships

Non-bank deepens adviser support amid rapid portfolio growth

Sue Griffiths steps up to lead FMT partnerships

First Mortgage Trust (FMT), a New Zealand fund manager specialising in property lending, has appointed Sue Griffiths (pictured) as national strategic partnerships manager, a role centred on deepening adviser and aggregator relationships and expanding non-bank lending solutions nationwide.

Griffiths succeeds Bruce Smith following a decade of service, with the remit refined to support FMT’s strategy of portfolio growth and diversification.

The appointment follows a period of significant expansion for FMT, which recently surpassed $2 billion in funds under management  a milestone in its nearly 30-year history and strengthened its regional presence with the appointment of Christchurch-based BDM Natalie East.

Seasoned leader with trans-Tasman experience

With 30+ years across New Zealand and Australia’s financial services sector, Griffiths brings proven capability in sales leadership, strategic execution, and relationship management.

She joined FMT 18+ months ago and has been recognised for a collaborative leadership style and strategic insight. Her industry accolades include NZA Elite Business Woman of the Year 2022.

What FMT is saying

Head of Lending Phil Bennett said the appointment reflects Griffiths’ proven market insight and leadership strength.

“Sue’s leadership and understanding of the lending market make her an exceptional fit for this role,” Bennett said. “Her ability to mentor and empower our teams while driving strategic growth will further strengthen FMT’s position in the market.”

Griffiths said she’s looking forward to reconnecting with industry partners and supporting adviser growth.

“I’m really excited to step into this new role and get back out in the industry, reconnecting with advisers and aggregators while forging new relationships," she said.

"I’ve always had a passion supporting the mortgage sector through training and education, helping advisers deliver solutions for their clients. I believe FMT is the best placed non-bank lender who can support advisers with the right solutions and inspire growth and success across the industry.”

Chief executive Paul Bendall said Griffiths’ promotion highlights FMT’s culture of investing in talent.

“Sue’s appointment reflects both the evolution of the role and our commitment to growing strong partnerships," Bendall said. "We’re fortunate to have someone of Sue’s calibre stepping up, and it’s always rewarding to promote from within.”

Refined role, clearer broker focus

FMT says the refreshed remit will sharpen its partnership model with advisers, allowing BDMs to concentrate on relationships, education, and outcomes for borrowers.

The appointment underscores FMT’s ongoing commitment to broker channels and to long-term partnerships that deliver smarter lending solutions across New Zealand.
