ANZ NZ confirms key executive appointments in talent and culture

Michelle Russell and Tim Horgan step into permanent leadership roles, following recent executive changes at ANZ Bank New Zealand.

Michelle Russell appointed to lead global digital employee experience

Michelle Russell (pictured left) has been permanently appointed to lead ANZ’s new global talent and culture digital employee experience function, effective May 19. She was initially seconded to the role in February 2024 while a permanent appointment was sought.

Tim Horgan to take on general manager talent and culture role

Tim Horgan (pictured right), who has been acting as general manager talent and culture for ANZ NZ since Russell’s secondment, has now been appointed to the role on a permanent basis.

His appointment is subject to a non-objection from the Reserve Bank and will take effect from the date that non-objection is received.

Horgan brings over 20 years of experience in human resources and business performance roles. Since joining ANZ NZ in 2006, he has held various positions in learning and capability, change management, business performance, and business partnering across multiple business areas.

In his new role, Horgan will lead the development and implementation of innovative people strategies, programs, and policies to support ANZ NZ's approximately 8,000 employees, according to ANZ. He is also responsible for ensuring the bank has the right people and capabilities to support its business strategy and performance, underpinned by an inclusive organisational culture.

Leadership updates follow recent ANZ NZ Board changes

These leadership appointments come in the wake of recent board changes at ANZ NZ.

In April, Gerard Florian, ANZ group executive technology and group services, retired from the ANZ NZ board after serving as a non-executive director since October 2022.

In his place, Mark Whelan, ANZ group executive institutional, joined the ANZ NZ board as a non-executive director, with the Reserve Bank confirming no objection to his appointment.

Following these updates, the ANZ NZ board comprises Scott St John (chair), Dame Joan Withers, Mark Tume, Nagaja Sanatkumar, Carolyn Steele, Mark Whelan, and Antonia Watson, ANZ NZ CEO and group executive.
