Industry associations appoint new leaders

IMLA and BSA elect new chairs to oversee period of sector change

Industry associations appoint new leaders

Two major representative organisations have elected new leadership to guide their respective memberships through a period of shifting regulatory requirements and evolving market dynamics.

Jonathan Stinton (pictured top left), head of intermediary relationships at Coventry Building Society, and Simon Taylor (pictured top right), chief executive of Melton Building Society, have been appointed chairs of the Intermediary Mortgage Lenders Association (IMLA) and of the Building Societies Association, respectively.

Stinton, whose appointment is effective immediately, takes over from Richard Beardshaw of HSBC UK. The latter’s tenure at IMLA concluded following two years of overseeing the organisation during substantial regulatory activity and sector transformation. Stinton has sat on the IMLA management committee since 2023 and brings considerable experience in lender-intermediary engagement across the building society field.

The refreshed IMLA management committee comprises Amanda Bryden of Halifax Intermediaries and Scottish Widows Bank, Jeremy Duncombe of Accord Mortgages, Nicola Goldie of Aldermore Bank, and Paul Fenn of Skipton Building Society. Co-opted appointments include Charlotte Grimshaw of Suffolk Building Society and Sara Palmer of GenH. Kate Davies will remain in her post as executive director.

“I’m very honoured to become chair of IMLA and to have the opportunity to lead the association at such a pivotal time for our market,” Stinton said. “Intermediaries remain crucial to good customer outcomes, and I look forward to working with Kate and the committee to ensure that lenders’ voices are represented and heard as we navigate regulatory change, economic uncertainty and the evolving needs of consumers.”

At the BSA, Taylor, who was formerly deputy chair, succeeded Julie-Ann Haines, chief executive of Principality Building Society.

“I’m delighted to be taking on the role of BSA chair at such an exciting time for the sector, with the government’s commitment to doubling the size of the mutual and co-operative economy,” Taylor said. “As BSA chair, I’m looking forward to engaging with our stakeholders to ensure that building societies and credit unions are valued as a key part of a properly diverse UK financial services sector, delivering value, choice and social improvement for our members today, and tomorrow.”
